friday fixations

{new fall shows} I'm really enjoying some of the new shows this season, so I thought I'd share my current favourites:

{new girl} I'm extra loving this adorable comedy starring Zooey Deschanel (who doesn't love her, right?). And the best part? Idle Husband likes it, too! It's funny, quirky, and cutesy smart and I absolutely adore how nerdy Jess is. I feel like a lot of the things she says and does are what most girls' inner dialogues are really like (but most girls are usually too afraid or embarrassed to act or speak that way).

{pan am} This show is great if you love ogling amazing vintage looks and decor (and brushing up on history -- hello, past social studies teachers! I know nothing about anything that happened in the '60s and they were super interesting!). I also love Colette's french accent, the CIA intrigue, and Maggie's independent and crazy personality. I think things will be picking up pretty soon, but I don't think it's too late to start watching.

{happy endings} This isn't a new series, but I don't feel like as many people watched it as they should have during its first season. In fact, I was kind of surprised to see it back this year. It reminds me of Friends, but in the later years when things were quirkier, funnier, and weirder -- in a good way. None of that heavy drama junk weighing down fun scenarios.

{up all night} I HAD to watch this for Will Arnett (we love Arrested Development) and Christina Applegate (she's always been a favourite). I was so happy (and relieved) that it turned out to be a smart and witty comedy that also just happens to have a baby (baby-centric shows always make me nervous because they can so easily veer into being too baby-ish, i.e. all story lines revolve around baby). Oh and Maya Rudolph as a mock Oprah character is fantastic! She's just the right kind of crazy needed to add interest.

{wrigley's apple pie gum} I'm not a huge gum fan but man, is this delicious. It tastes exactly like an apple pie! It's definitely not a gum in my sense of the word, but when you're staying away from sugar and unhealthy treats, this is the perfect thing for when you feel like you're losing your will power. We also tried the strawberry shortcake and I'd say skip that one. It's good, but it tastes like artificial strawberry and nothing like cake. It definitely doesn't live up to the apple pie. They've also got it in mint chocolate chip, orange creme pop, and key lime pie. I'd love to try them, too.

{icy geometric shapes} I love how this geometric garland looks. Wouldn't they be great as individual tree ornaments, too?

{long johns} When did -5 start feeling like the ice age? I didn't think that was too bad when I ventured out today, but it didn't take long before I wished I had more on my legs than a thin covering of jean. Last year, I found some amazing microfibre long johns tucked in amongst Superstore's microfibre shirts for men, women, and children. I was only able to find 2 pairs of them in cream, but despite the poor colour choice, I wore them almost every day. (I would practically sob at the thought of taking them off.) Have a look in those cardboard displays the next time you're there. The long johns sell out really quickly for a reason.

{peeled grapefruit} I used to eat grapefruit the typical way, sliced in half with a grapefruit spoon, but then, unexplainably, I decided to peel one like an orange. I don't even like peeling oranges, but I quickly realized that peeling a grapefruit has such a big payoff. A large amount of the bitterness comes from the inner membrane and even getting a little taste of it can put you right off the whole fruit. Now I have a little grapefruit ritual. I peel the outer skin, pull the two halves apart, then peel the membrane off of each segment (it's not as time consuming as you'd think. The membrane separates from the fruit quite easily). I then put the peeled fruit into a bowl with cinnamon, vanilla, and a bit of sugar and eat it with a spoon. I don't think I'll ever eat a grapefruit by cutting it in half again.

{advent calendars} I'm thinking about creating one of these this year (something like this but maybe with old socks?). I've always had an odd fondness of them even though I grew up never "doing" the whole advent thing. I'm just debating whether I want to do the full month or focus only on the last 12 days before Christmas. I wonder if a full month would get exasperating after a while of coming up with fun treats and things to do. Twelve days of Christmas would highlight the season enough and would give me a direction for each day based on the song (for this year at least). Are you going to have a homemade one, buy a chocolate calendar, or not going to bother at all?

BBQ

We are so doing a bunch of BBQing this weekend! I'm telling you! I really want some BBQ steak, like, desperately. I also seriously considered this cuz it's just not summer without a hot dog. And there's nothing more classic than weiner wangs.

don't forget to include your daily servin's of vegetables!

happy canada day!

celebratory red and white bouquet
(ok ok my roses just happened to open enough today so I could cut them -- also I'm uber excited by how large the bush is this year! You should see how many buds are on that thing! I think they're thanking me for removing all the junipers that were suffocating them)

celebratory strawberry jello in fancy cups
(ok ok I made this jello for Idle Husband's sore mouth a couple days ago, and we just happened to eat some today)

So obviously, there's no point beating around the bush. I've done nothing for Canada day. I might have felt like it last year, but this year, I'm very much in a 'meh' kind of mood about it. Don't get me wrong. I love Canada and all, but I'm just not going to have a BBQ for friends and family featuring red and white foods and tiny Canada flags on toothpicks. I didn't even think to make red and white cupcakes for IH's work, but I went all out for St. Patrick's Day, and I even decorated the house with little hearts for Valentine's Day, too. Poor Canada gets a big fat nothing. In fact, it even got a 'oh. It's Canada Day today?' Go figure. I think we might try to get out and watch the fireworks tonight, but that's only if we're able to stay up long enough. (honestly, I would really like to get some firework pictures, but I also have some really good ones from last year that I never used for anything so...yeah...you see where I'm going with this? Seen one firework, you've seen 'em all, am I right?)

In nonCanada Day news:

Our TiVo had a meltdown yesterday and we lost all our shows. Two True Blood episodes. Gone. Lost forever. There's no way to get them back! Oh wait. They'll probably rerun or we could just rent the DVD. Crisis averted.

Instead of taking TiVo up on their generous offer of having us buy another machine for $40 less than store price (golly gee!), we decided to dump them altogether and switch to the Shaw HDPVR. It's actually cheaper than TiVo and it acts the exact same way. Huh. We thought we'd have to keep tabs on shows and set up recordings each week and then we read the instructions and it remembers and records your favourite shows. Just. Like. TiVo.

We're still figuring it out, but Idle Husband is super excited about being able to watch and record shows in HD. Honestly, I don't see much of a difference. Whoa. Wait. There's a huge difference! Now I don't wanna watch things unless they're in HD. Look. Look what Idle Husband has done to me! I was so content with my small tube tv that I got from my grandma (almost) 10 years ago, my VCR recording routine, my old Dell computer with Windows XP (with a pop-up I could never get rid of, so I'd just tuck it in the corner of the screen and carry on), and my only game for the NES: Super Mario 3 (played since 1992). Sigh. Now I'm a technology junky nerd!

(Seriously, though. Once you've experienced a PVR, I'm telling you, you cannot go back to watching tv the old way. It feels like you're a slave. I had to stop everything, cuz my show was on! I had to turn the volume down and patiently endure commercials. Well, no more! When IH introduced TiVo to me, it was like this whole new era of freedom was ushered in. Like my tv shackles had been broken. So I can't go back to watching tv like an animal, I just can't!)

3 posts in one day? wha what!

So cheesed that we found out too late about Conan's (only other Canadian) stop in Edmonton. Why, Conan?! Why did you have to wait until after we put the idea of flying to Vancouver just for you out of our heads and stopped torturing ourselves by looking at your schedule every day to announce it?!

Also super cheesed that he'll be back to his talk show on TBS. A station we don't get because of Peachtree TV. (raising fists in the air) Damn you, Peachtree TV!

the title makes me think of that youtube video, Chocolate Rain. Just, you know, FYI

We've been glued to this game all weekend. I really love watching gameplay. I don't know if I've ever said that, but I think that all comes from how I grew up only being allowed to watch the boys play Nintendo rather than ever being asked (or considered) to play also. Anyway, any video game that Idle Husband plays that actually has a great story and keeps me interested, I'm all for. So Heavy Rain is just that sort of game but it goes one step further. It's like a movie. No, truly, it is. It's all cinematic and the story isn't really your typical video game plot. Then what you do is all the actions and decisions. Clean a cut, start a car, climb a fence, all which (presumably) effect the eventual result. We've really become emotionally attached to the characters which isn't hard to do the way the game's set up. It's not like other video games where if your character gets hurt or dies you think nothing of it. Oh, I'll come back to life or get more health somewhere. Meh. Whatever. Heavy Rain makes you feel like you have to take care of the character and keep them out of harm's way. So when they get into certain situations (like having to climb through power lines or fight off a home invader) you really get panicky and stressed out trying to push the buttons correctly so the character doesn't get hurt. It's amazing really. Highly recommended.

In other news: I thought it was spring, but this morning it was cold and windy. Today I had planned on starting to refinish this dresser I bought last year, but after my walk I was just too cold. I'm still cold. I put on a sweater, but that doesn't seem to be helping much. Of course, that's just the way as I was planning on doing the dresser, but it's downstairs where it's noticeably colder and the thought of being downstairs has me literally shivering (or cringing, but I'm going to go with shivering because it accentuates my cold excuse better). I should just suck it up and do it already because I've been putting it off for so long, and I might even warm up (doubtful).

Just when I thought it was safe to return to television

Dear everyone,

I'm really enjoying jokes that involve Jay Leno bashing.
Sincerely, me.

To whom it may concern,

I don't think I'll ever get a twitter account, but I am going to read the only twitter worth reading.

Friday, January 22, 2010

I could never possibly express to you in words my hatred for Jay Leno. And not just because of this. I've ALWAYS hated him. Him and Charlie Sheen.

Tonight's Conan O'Brien's last night hosting the Tonight Show.

Let's have a moment of silence.
